Avis Car Hire App

I was tasked with doing a full redesign of the Avis car hire app. The goal was not only to improve the look and feel of the UI and experience but also to increase conversions.

To start with similar to how we approached the Budget app, we decided to use Google Flutter as the platform allowing us to develop an app for Android and iOS at the same time.

The app’s new design was highly user-tested to ensure a smooth booking experience for Avis’s users.

I decided to use a clean aesthetic with plenty of white space to declutter the app, only showing relevant information to the users with the ability to easily access more information if required.

Designing the UI

This project was a huge undertaking. The requirements and features for the app were a long list. So designing an app that would not only work but work well required a lot of careful design using a tidy work space and a comprehensive design system.

This app was designed in Sketch using Sketch for both the UI and the design component library.

Each section was split out into its own page and the whole file was source controlled using Abstract to reduce errors.

The screens were all linked to form a working prototype for testing, demonstration, and to support development.

Project Outcome

Project Delivered on Time

Thanks to sensible in-depth research and planning towards the beginning of the project we were able to deliver the new app on time and therefore within budget despite complications caused by Covid-19.

The app is now available to download on both iOS and Android around the world and is seeing great conversion rates from users booking rentals.

Future Proof

The app has been designed and developed in such a way as to be future-proofed as much as possible within the tech industry.

The Avis app was developed using a google technology called flutter which is relatively new but also highly supported. Flutter also enabled us to publish the app onto both iOS and Android drastically speeding up development and the ability to bug fix and improve.

The app design was created using an atomic design system. This allows us to quickly change components, design styles and create new functions easily.

Excellent UI/UX Improvement

The Avis app was heavily tested and refined during the design process resulting in a slick User Experience where the app is easy to navigate and quick to use.

The app was created with real-world Avis users in mind and was designed with real-user input to develop a great user experience that not only ticks the boxes for Avis customers but delivers on business goals too.

Introducing New Tech

We managed to introduce new technology into the new Avis app to improve the entire rental experience at Avis as a whole.

Self Serve: Self serve allows users to skip the queues and manage their entire rental journey directly from the app. Now users can book, manage and edit their rentals as well as unlock and lock the car direct from their phone. No need to visit a station or speak to anyone. Just head straight to the car that you have booked.

Onfido: Gone are the slow old days where you have to verify yourself via post or in person. Now you can supply all the relevant documents and prove your identity directly in the Avis app.

Avis App Screens

This was a huge project which required 100’s of screens and 1000’s of UI elements designing. Here are a few more screen examples for you to view.
